Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) emerged in the early 20th
century. Derived from judo and traditional jujutsu, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu was
developed by the Gracie family through the initial teachings of Mitsuyo Maeda. The
Gracie’s placed more emphasis on ground fighting, and developed a system designed
for smaller and weaker fighters to overcome speed, strength, and athleticism
through tactical positioning and leverage. Today it is practiced both with and
without the traditional uniform, known as a Gi. It is one of the fastest
growing martial arts and sports in the world.
